The University of Virginia Press published “Road Cycling in Central Virginia: A Guide”. My book was written to guide road cycling enthusiasts on both sides of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the days before Google Maps, mainstream GPS units and Strava, and it introduced readers to some of the most agreeable and scenic road riding on the East Coast.
The book’s introduction covers basic information relevant to the area, such as climate, road-marking conventions, what to take on a ride, stores along the route and local road hazards. The remainder of the book is devoted to detailed descriptions of routes and maps geared toward riders at both beginning and intermediate levels.
Rides in the book leave from Charlottesville, Staunton, Waynesboro and Harrisonburg and venture onto the country roads of Albemarle, Greene, Augusta and Rockingham counties. Most rides cover between 10 and 30 miles, making this the perfect companion for both visitors to the area and for local residents wanting to discover the best and safest spots to get out on the road.
